Australia
Australia is massive; about the size of the US, and very sparsely peopled, with a population of 17 million - little more than my home country, The Netherlands.

This is an ancient land, and often looks it. With its harsh interior, the Outback, west of the Great Dividing Range, and its lush coastal areas, the country is a model of contrast. Most of the population lives within 20 km of the ocean and the most famous natural attraction is the 2000-km-long Great Barrier Reef, with its complex of islands and great diving spots. In the Red Centre, Uluru (Ayers Rock), is a huge monolith right in the middle of a surprisingly fertile desert.

In February 1996, I traveled around Australia for about a month, mostly around Sydney and Alice Springs. As allways, I brought my trusty bicycle with me to Uluru and the Olga's. However, as I found out the hard way, summer time in the Australian Outback is not a good time to bike!
