Mongolia
Mongolia is a wild and beautiful country, with rough mountain ranges in the western regions, stunning lakes in the north, vast deserts, rolling grasslands, dense forests, and unique wildlife. "The Land of Blue Sky" has a rich and interesting history. Once rulers of the vast Eurasian steppe, the Mongolian nomads were led by Chinggis Khaan and expanded their empire from Beijing to the Caspian Sea. His legacy is still very much alive in modern-day Mongolia, which has been ravaged by 70 years of Russian Communist domination, and brought it to the brink of bankruptcy.

Survival of the nomadic people still depends enormously on domestic animals - camels, cattle (including yaks), horses, sheeps, goats, and reindeer in the north.

In 1997, I spent 2 months riding around Mongolia, from the Gobi desert in the south, to Khovsgol Nuur lake region in the north. A very difficult place to bike because of the poor roads and heavy winds, but a worthwhile experience nonetheless.
