Amantani island has managed to retain some degree of cultural isolation and autonomous control over the tourist trade The ancient agricultural terraces are maintained in excellent condition and traditional crafts of stone masonry are still practiced, as are the old Inca systems of agriculture, labour and ritual trade. A rotating system has been established with which local families get an equal chance to house visiting tourists.
